Liposuction “Smooth your curves”

Liposuction sculpts the body by removing localized deposits of fat from under the skin from treated areas of the body.

When is it used?

People who benefit from this procedure have areas of fat that do not respond to diet and exercise. Commonly treated areas include the abdomen, waist, hips, love handles, buttocks, thighs, knees, back upper arms, breasts, chin and neck.

What happens during the procedure?

A tumescent technique is used when performing liposuction. With this approach, anesthetic solution is injected into the areas to be treated. This allows the compartments of fat to be more easily removed with the liposuction device, which is a cannula (narrow tube) placed under the skin. It also helps reduce postoperative discomfort, bruising and swelling.

Depending on the amount of fat to be removed, liposuction may be performed under local or general anesthetic.

What are the risks and potential complications?

Liposuction is normally a very safe procedure, especially when fat removal is kept to a reasonable and conservative volume. Complications can occur and include bruising, swelling, infection and temporary numbness. Serious complications such as blood clots and reactions to anesthesia are extremely rare. These will be discussed at your office consultation.

What do I expect after surgery?

Return to normal activities is within 7-10 days; however, heavier activities will need to be deferred for a few weeks. A custom fitted garment is worn for 6 weeks after surgery. A noticeable difference in body contour will be noted immediately, however, after the swelling subsides, by 6 weeks, the improvement will be more noticeable. Longer term swelling may occur (up to 6 months) which may camouflage your final result until that time.A contoured body shape is the expected result. Long term effects include more even distribution of body fat with weight changes, rather than accumulation in the treated areas.
