Breast Implant Surgery “Enhance your shape”

Breast implants are used to make the breasts larger. The procedure, known as breast augmentation, involves placing a breast implant behind the breast to increase size and enhance shape.

When is it used?

This procedure is used to increase the size of the breast if a woman feels her breasts are too small, or to restore breast volume, for example, after weight loss, pregnancy or aging.

What happens at the consultation?

At the consultation for breast implants Dr. de Kleer will provide you with information about breast implants and the procedure of breast augmentation.

She will discuss with you options for incision placement, implant placement, implant type, shape and size. You may want to bring a sports bra or bikini top with a snug fitting T-shirt or favorite top to try breast implant sizers in the office at your consultation

Dr. de Kleer will help determine and make recommendations to help you decide which option is just right for you.

There are two main types of breast implants, cohesive silicone gel implants and saline implants, and these come in a large variety of sizes and shapes.  At your consultation Dr. de Kleer will discuss the size and shape most suitable for you.

Silicone implants are made of silicone that has a natural soft feel. The consistency of the implant is not dissimilar to a gummy bear, and like a gummy bear, should the implant break, the silicone will not leak. These new cohesive gel implants, which are approved by Health Canada, are unlike the silicone implants that were banned for use in the 1990′s.

Saline implants have a silicone outer shell and are filled with saline (salt water) solution. These are filled to the desired size in the operating room. This type of implant has been on the market and used successfully for at least 30 years. The disadvantage of saline implants is that they can rupture and leak. Although the saline won’t harm your body, a leaking implant will need to be replaced, which will require additional surgery.

Incisions for breast implantation

To place a breast implant an incision is necessarily made through the skin. The incision can be in one of three places in the breast fold, around the areola or in the axilla. Dr. de Kleer will discuss these approaches in detail at your consultation.

Implant Placement

Breast implants can be placed directly underneath the breast tissue (subglandular), or beneath the pectoral muscle of the chest (subpectoral), which lies beneath the breast. There are advantages to each of these placements, and Dr. de Kleer will go over this with you at your consultation. There is no single approach that is best for all patients, and therefore individual consideration is required.
