Facelift surgery smoothes the loose skin on your face and neck, tightens the deeper tissues, and removes excess fat to give your face a toned, more youthful appearance. It can be performed alone or at the same time as another facial procedure such as a brow lift or eyelid surgery.

When is it used?

Gravity, sun exposure, stress and aging all cause our skin to loosen. The most common “problem” areas are the folds that develop from the corners of the mouth down to the jaw, the jowls along the jaw line, and excess skin and fat in the neck area. There is no right age for facelift; rather there are specific goals for different age groups and for each face. Dr. de Kleer will discuss the specific goals and expected outcomes at your consultation.

What happens during the procedure?

Dr. de Kleer offers different facelift techniques depending on the specific goals of the procedure. A short scar may be used which is hidden in the contour of the ear, or a longer incision that curves around the ear into the hairline may be needed. A small incision under the chin may be required depending on the treatment plan for the neck. The skin is lifted, the deeper tissues adjusted, the excess fat removed and the extra skin in then trimmed and redraped. A light dressing is applied,

What are the risks and potential complications?

Some of the complications that may occur with facelift surgery include bleeding, infection, numbness, facial asymmetry, temporary facial muscle weakness and an adverse reaction to anesthesia. Fortunately, these occur infrequently. You can reduce your risks by closely following your instructions before and after surgery, and most importantly, refraining from smoking. Dr. de Kleer will discuss these issues with you in detail at the time of your initial consultation.

What do I expect after surgery?

By 7- 14 days after surgery, your stitches will have been removed, the majority of your bruising will have subsided, and you will be starting to enjoy a natural, refreshed, younger looking you.
