Acne

Acne is one of the most common skin conditions faced by teenagers and adults alike. The negative ramifications of acne on self-confidence have been well documented, which makes the need for safe and effective treatments all the more pressing. Oakville Plastic Surgery manages active acne and subsequent scarring through a combination of professional skin treatments, prescription medication, medical-grade skincare and aesthetic treatments.

Conditions

Visible Effects

Acne is characterized by the presence of comedones (blackheads and whiteheads), pustules, papules or nodules as well as redness and even some scarring. Acne commonly appears over the forehead, nose, chin, cheeks and jawline as well as areas of the body such as the back and chest. Where acne appears and its severity will differ between individuals.

Underlying Causes

The hormonal fluctuations associated with puberty can lead to the formation of acne as the escalation of androgens stimulates increased sebaceous production. In the case of adult acne, the cause has been linked to hormonal abnormalities, stress and possibly a genetic predisposition. Whatever the trigger, when sebaceous secretions combine with dead skin cells and form a blockage in the skin follicle, acne is formed.
