Age Spots | Oakville Plastic Surgery – Dr. Nancy de Kleer
Age spots, also known as brown or liver spots, are a common skin aging concern. The first signs of age spots can arise as early as our twenties and continue to progress over time. Advancements in medical aesthetics have led to effective and non-invasive treatments to support an even and clear skin tone at all stages of life. Oakville Plastic Surgery treats age spots through an integration of professional skin treatments, aesthetic devices and medical-grade skincare.
Age spots appear as brown and sometimes white spots that are flat and round, with variation in their diameter and shape. Age spots arise on skin that is typically exposed to sunlight such as the face, neck, chest, back, arms, back of the hands and legs. These skin discolourations create an uneven skin tone and contribute to an aged appearance.
Repeated sun exposure can damage the DNA of the skin cells. This damage can disrupt the normal production of melanin, which gives the skin its colour. This results in the abnormal distribution (brown spots) or lack of production (white spots) of melanin.
