What causes scarring?

Types of scars

But sometimes collagen overproduction during the healing process causes the injured area to grow bigger or more visible than before; you might notice fibrous marks that are raised above the skin. These hypertrophic (raised) scars are firm bulges that extend beyond the injury site, and they can be red, pink, purple or darker than the skin surrounding it.
Acne scars
Acne or chicken pox scars often present as depressed atrophic (indented or pitted) scars that cause an uneven, marked skin texture. Sunken scars like these can also be called ice pick scars.
Pigmented scars
Some scars heal darker or lighter than your natural skin tone even though their texture isn’t indented or raised. Pigmented scars are caused by inflammation and damage to the skin. Skin often looks red or discoloured shortly after an injury and then returns to a regular tone once the injury has healed. But with pigmented scars, the colour may deepen during the healing process and remain afterwards. They can appear red, pink, brown (PIH) or white (hypopigmentation).
