At Oakville Plastic Surgery & Medspa, Dr. de Kleer and our expert team are committed to guiding you through every step of your surgical journey. That’s why we’ve introduced this new series on surgical preparation. Here we’ve given you an overview of what to expect throughout the process, and in the coming months we’ll be doing a deeper dive into each aspect of surgical preparation, day of surgery, and recovery–equipping you with everything you need for a positive, comfortable experience. Here are some things you should know to prepare well for your procedure and maximize your results.

Surgical Consultation: Your First Step

Your cosmetic surgery journey begins with a thorough consultation. During this appointment, Dr. de Kleer will:

  • Learn your current goals and assess your specific concerns
  • Discuss realistic expectations and potential outcomes for your results
  • Review your medical history, lifestyle, and other details that help us ensure a safe, comfortable surgical experience
  • Explain the procedure in detail and offer resources to help you prepare and understand each step
  • Address any questions you may have so that you can enter surgery comfortably and with clarity about every step of the process.

All of our consultations (including surgical) are complimentary. Patients will have a preliminary consultation with our surgical coordinator to determine their surgical candidacy. Non-surgical consultations for skincare, neuromodulators, fillers, and other treatments are complimentary.

Pre-Operative Preparation: 2 Weeks Before Surgery

You’ll need to stop smoking

Smoking cessation is essential for a minimum of six weeks before surgery. This is incredibly important, as smoking significantly impairs healing and can lead to complications and poor scar formation. Nicotine can constrict your blood vessels, minimizing oxygen flow as your tissues are healing. This can delay recovery and negatively impact results.

Maintain a healthy body weight before surgery.

Being at your ideal body weight before surgery can help reduce any risks of your surgery, improve the results and outcome of your surgery, and enhance the results of surgeries like body contouring or Mommy Makeovers. All patients must be at a healthy BMI to be considered for general anesthesia surgery. Starting your surgical journey at a consistent, stable weight helps ensure long-lasting results. This is especially true for results of surgeries like tummy tucks or liposuction.

Invest in your own physical fitness

When your body is strong and healthy, your oxygen and blood flow are maximized for excellent recovery and a better surgical experience. A healthier, stronger body tends to experience the following during and following surgery:

  • Faster healing and recovery times
  • Reduced risk of discomfort or complications
  • Better circulation for a swifter recovery and better scar healing
  • Increased energy, mental clarity, and physical health throughout the healing process

Try to keep up at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity and exercise for most days of the week in the weeks leading up to your procedure.

Eat a balanced, nutritious diet

Everything you put into your body can contribute to the building blocks that are essential for healing, recovery, and wellness. In general, these essentials help support the nutrition you need. Ask your doctor about the best way to maintain a balanced, healthy diet that matches your body’s unique needs:

  • Lean proteins like chicken, legumes, and fish for tissue repair
  • Colourful fruits and vegetables rich in vitamins and antioxidants
  • Regular hydration and consistent water intake for good circulation
  • Whole grains and fibre-rich foods for energy and mental strength

Important restrictions leading up to your cosmetic surgery

As surgery gets closer, you’ll want to make sure you’re keeping all the above in mind and getting consistent, full nights of sleep. The following substances should be avoided because they can increase your risk of bleeding, and may potentially interfere with healing or anesthesia during and after surgery:

  • Vitamin E supplements
  • Homeopathic remedies
  • Any anti-inflammatory medications
  • Garlic supplements

Financial planning for your surgery

Comprehensive planning for your surgery includes having a good handle on your financial investment and how you’ll be paying for your procedure. At Oakville Plastic Surgery & Medspa, we accept cash, Visa and MasterCard, Interac debit cards, and certified cheques (Amex).

Looking to pay in installments or to explore payment plans?

We offer payment plans through Medicard (iFinance Medical) and Beautifi to help make your investment possible and to space out your surgical payments. Please note that full payment for surgical procedures is required two weeks prior to surgery. Ask us about payment plans in your surgical consultation and we’ll be happy to walk you through your options.
