Does skin hydration matter over the summer?

There’s a pretty consistent message we receive over the winter months about our skincare regimen – hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. But, does this hold true over the summer?

For Oakville clients, the humid Ontario summer can make the moisturizers you slathered onto your skin in the winter feel like a bulky layer. This can lead to shiny skin for normal and oily skin types – not an ideal look. Revising and adjusting your skincare routine seasonally can accommodate these skin changes. For dry skin types, no changes may be needed as in all likelihood, dry skin will feel quite comfortable with the enhanced humidity.
Is skin dehydration and dryness the same thing?

There is often confusion about the difference between skin dryness and dehydration. In the simplest terms, skin dryness relates to a lack of sebum production (the skin’s natural moisturizer). Dehydration relates to insufficient levels of water present in the skin. A lighter moisturizer may be in order for clients with normal and oily skin; however, it is still important to consider some of the factors that can contribute to dehydration for every skin type. Because of these factors, Oakville Plastic Surgery and Advanced Skincare strongly encourages continued use of a moisturizer.

Summer triggers for dehydrated skin.

  • air conditioning
  • sun exposure
  • moisture loss due to temperature regulation (ie: perspiration)
  • typical summer vices such as bellinis on the patio (ie: alcohol consumption)

Signs that your skin is dehydrated include:

  • flakiness
  • tightness
  • noticeable fine lines
  • sensitivity
  • rough skin texture

In addition to these signs, maintaining hydrated skin has been proven to prevent the formation and deepening of wrinkles. All good reasons to maintain hydration even during the hottest of summer days! Fortunately, there are light-weight options to enhance skin hydration AND prevent a heavy feel or shiny look. Products containing ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and plant ceramides offer the ideal lightweight solution for moisture retention. Oakville Plastic Surgery and Advanced Skincare offers a variety of skincare brands with serums and moisturizers to enhance hydration in your summer routine.
