Eyelid surgery, brow lifts, and surgical solutions for tired-looking eyes

The way your eyes look has an incredible impact on each first impression you make throughout the day. Sure, eyes are a window to the soul, but they’re also one of the first places we start to show signs of aging or fatigue. Our eyes can make us appear more tired or unhappy than we really are. By taking good care of the delicate skin around the eye area and using procedures and treatments as a tool to stay bright-eyed, you can make sure your eyes send the right message every time. Let’s talk about surgical procedures that offer a lasting outcome for eye area concerns.

What is blepharoplasty?

An eye lift (blepharoplasty) is a surgical solution that involves the removal of excess skin, fat, and sometimes muscle from the upper and/or lower eyelids. As we age, collagen and elastin production slow down and the delicate eye area may crease, wrinkle, or sag over time. If you’ve ever used tissue paper to wrap a present, you know that it starts to crease and pucker in a way that’s hard to undo. The delicate eye area is thin and susceptible to creasing more than any other part of the face.

Environmental factors, sun damage, hereditary factors, and natural aging all contribute to a more tired-looking eye area. Treatments like HALO Laser Skin Resurfacing or Thermage®  can aid in tightening and brightening the face, but blepharoplasty offers a surgical solution that lifts and tightens this delicate skin around the eye area with transformative, lasting results. Blepharoplasty can address under-eye bags, crow’s feet, or saggy skin on eyelids. Each procedure is unique to your concerns, your eye shape, and innovative surgical technique that’s tailored to your specific needs.

An upper blepharoplasty or eye lift targets hanging or loose skin on the upper eyelids.

Upper eyelid surgery tightens and reduces excess skin and fat along the upper eyelid. For some people, the excess tissues cause cosmetic concerns, and in some cases the eyelids may feel heavy and tired. Upper eyelid lift surgery helps with both of these concerns.

A lower blepharoplasty targets signs of aging in the undereye area.

Excess skin, under-eye bags, wrinkles, and excess skin can all be targeted in a lower blepharoplasty procedure. Upper and lower blepharoplasty may be combined in one procedure or performed separately, depending on each patient’s specific concerns and desired outcomes.

A brow lift can refresh the appearance of the forehead and enhance eye-opening results

Some patients also undergo a brow lift to target drooping, sagging eyebrows and horizontal lines that form on the forehead over time. This procedure can reduce furrows along the brow line to lift and smooth the upper part of the face; but as a result the whole of the face is refreshed. Surgical incisions along the forehead or scalp are made, specific to each unique patient’s needs. During surgery, Dr. de Kleer skillfully repositions forehead tissues and trims away excess skin for a smooth, lifting effect. A combination of eyelid surgery and brow lift can have a lifting effect for a more youthful appearance. Neuromodulators like BOTOX® Cosmetic can also amplify the results of upper eyelid surgery.

  • A temporal brow lift (lateral brow lift) focuses on the outer third of the brow area and works well for patients with lateral sagging.
During this procedure, Dr. de Kleer lifts and repositions the underlying tissue to elevate the appearance of the brow. Temporal brow lifts offer minimal scarring, with incisions that can be camouflaged by the hairline. They’re less invasive than other brow lifts. A temporal brow lift is commonly completed with an upper eyelid surgery for maximum effect.
  • A direct brow lift is ideal for patients with significant brow drooping, those who need precise lifting along the browline, or patients who don’t have a hairline that suitably camouflages or hides incisions. While a temporal lift focuses on the outer eye area, direct brow lifts provide a dramatic and targeted lift to elevate the entire brow. A direct brow lift uses incisions above the eyebrows or along the natural brown line to remove excess skin and lift the entire brow area. Scars for this procedure can be more noticeable, although they can fade over time.
