With fall on the horizon, it’s time to start thinking about what summer has done to our skin. Even with diligent application of sunscreen, our skin can still experience a moderate amount of UV exposure—and UV exposure means sun damage. Sun damage can present in a number of ways; besides a tan (which we all know IS sun damage), it can also appear as freckles, rough or uneven skin texture, large brown spots, diffuse facial redness or visible veins and vessels. And of course, there is the sun damage we don’t see. Even if you aren’t noticing the visible signs of sun damage, you may have some lurking just beneath your skin’s surface.
Whether visible or not, sun damage accounts for up to 90 per cent of skin aging. Luckily, there are a number of in-office treatments and at-home skincare products that can help treat and even reverse the signs of sun damage.
In-office treatments for sun damage.
Clinical peels | Clinical peels are a great way to treat mild to moderate sun damage. By targeting both the surface and deeper layers of damaged skin, clinical peels speed up the cell renewal process. This process causes us to shed the dead and damaged skin cells and replaces them with fresh, new, healthy skin cells. Clinical peels can be applied to the face, neck, chest and back and are safe for most skin types. Click here to learn more about customized clinical peels at Oakville Plastic Surgery.
Fotofacials (IPL photorejuvenation) | Used to treat facial flushing, hyperpigmentation and some visible veins and vessels, Fotofacials are a safe and non-invasive way to treat the visible signs of sun damage and aging. Using a unique combination of radio frequency (RF) and intense pulse light (IPL), Fotofacials target pigment in the skin. This colour correcting technology effectively ‘zaps’ targeted colour in the skin allowing your body to naturally clear away the targeted pigment. Laser treatments | Providing effective treatment for sun damage, visible veins and vessels, mild to moderate wrinkles and uneven skin texture, lasers provide an unmatched skin resurfacing experience. At Oakville Plastic Surgery, we employ the GentleMax laser. Lasers are uniquely equipped to target the deeper layers of sun damaged skin not accessible through clinical peels or Fotofacials. Lasers can target unique symptoms of sun damage and treatment candidacy will be discussed during your consultation.
