Top ways to winterize your skin.

winter skincare, skincare

The cooler temperatures that accompany winter weather affect more than our choice of clothing—they have an effect on how our skin feels as well. Dryness, dehydration and seasonal outbreaks of eczema and psoriasis are not uncommon when the mercury descends. In addition to the discomfort these changes may cause, the skin often appears dull and flaky, and fine lines become more pronounced. There are key measures you can take to stave off these seasonal changes. In this blog post we share our top tips to winterize your skin.

How to winter-proof your skin.

Resist the temptation of hot baths and showers. This is certainly tough to commit to, but the ill effects of hot water can exacerbate dry skin and worsen conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. Opting for bathing in warm rather than hot water will make a world of difference for the health of your skin. Be sure to apply oils and lotions while the skin is still damp to maximize moisture retention.
Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. For skin that is already dry, this is an easy concept to embrace, as the comfort of a heavier moisturizer provides welcome relief. People with normal to oily skin types have a harder time adopting this measure for fear of causing their skin to break out. Using moisturizers that are enriched with plant ceramides and hyaluronic acid, and free of occlusive ingredients such as mineral oil and lanolin, will prevent this fear from becoming a reality. The benefit to your skin (that is, the prevention of fine lines, wrinkles and inflammation that lead to aging) will far outweigh the risk of congestion—especially if you follow the recommendations of a trusted skin advisor when choosing your winter skin cream.
Wear sunscreen. Although the hours of daylight are less, there is still plenty of opportunity for sun damage to occur over the winter months. The ambient light reflecting off of snow, windows and pavement contribute to the aging caused by ultraviolet rays. You may consider reducing the SPF factor of your sunscreen, if it is quite high, to a minimum of SPF 30. This minimizes your exposure to chemical sunscreens (should your formulation of choice contain them) over the winter season.
Switch to a liquid or cream foundation and blush. These formulations provide more moisture to the skin and imbue a dewy finish, whereas powder-based formulations may come off looking powdery on the skin when it is dryer.
Visit your medical aesthetician for a clinical peel. One of the most effective ways to manage dull and dry skin over the winter months—or any time for that matter—is with a professional clinical peel. By deeply exfoliating the skin, the surface layer of dead and damaged skin cells is removed to reveal smooth, soft and hydrated skin that absorbs and retains moisture more effectively. Not to mention the luminous skin that results is certainly a nice mid-winter pick-me-up for your appearance.
Integrating these tips into your routine will give your skin a leg up on the harsh winter weather.
