Types of breast implants.
There are two different types of implants to choose from when planning a breast augmentation procedure: saline and silicone.
Silicone implants consist entirely of silicone, giving them a soft and natural feel. They come in a variety of sizes, and the modern cohesive gel version does not pose the health and safety concerns as the versions that were banned in the 1990s. If cohesive silicone implants rupture, the breast often looks and feels the same because the gel will not leak beyond the implant into surrounding areas of the breast. The problem therein lies in detecting when a rupture has occurred and replacement is needed.
Saline implants have a silicone outer shell, which is then filled with saline to achieve the desired size at the time of the procedure. These implants pose a risk of leaking when ruptured; however, the sterile saline is not a harmful substance to the body. A rupture is readily detected with saline implants, as the size and shape of the breast is immediately diminished, requiring replacement. Saline implants are extremely safe and are a more affordable option than silicone implants.
