The Truth About Botox®

The field of cosmetic medicine encountered a dramatic breakthrough with the discovery that a purified protein known as botulinum toxin a, which had primarily been used to treat overactive muscles, could smooth deep expression lines around the eyes. You guessed it, we’re talking about BOTOX COSMETIC®. This neuromodulator treatment has become the go-to of many cosmetic practitioners, but despite its widespread use, patients still have many questions that need to be answered about this specialized treatment. In this blog post, we’ll attempt to dispel any confusion Oakville patients may have about BOTOX COSMETIC® treatments.

Common Botox® myths.

You will look frozen.

While there are certainly examples of this, there are far more people who have had a BOTOX COSMETIC® treatment and no one is the wiser. Finding and working with a practitioner whose aesthetic tendency appeals to you is important in order to achieve your ideal outcome. When an artistic and subtle sensibility is applied to a neuromodulator treatment, the result is a refreshed and rejuvenated appearance without any obvious explanation for the improvement.

You will notice a result right away.

The treatment takes a few days before it effectively interrupts the nerve pathways that activate muscle contractions. After about 2-4 days, the effects should become evident, with the final results arising after about a week. The treatment is temporary and requires follow-up treatments every 3-4 months to maintain results.

The body can develop a resistance to BOTOX COSMETIC®.

The occurrence is rare, but it is possible after repeat injections to develop a resistance to BOTOX COSMETIC® due to the formation of antibodies to it.

BOTOX COSMETIC® can treat any and every wrinkle.

The way that a neuromodulator treatment such as BOTOX COSMETIC® smoothens wrinkles is by disrupting the nerves that activate muscle contractions, which form expression lines such as crow’s feet and frown lines. For lines and wrinkles that are static in nature (i.e. not activated by muscle contraction), BOTOX COSMETIC® is an ineffective treatment. In this instance, a filler or skin tightening treatment may be a more suitable solution.

If you start young, you won’t develop wrinkles.

Research has shown that regular treatment with BOTOX COSMETIC® at the first sign of the development of expression lines can prevent their formation. However, BOTOX COSMETIC® is not a cure-all for youthful skin. There are many other factors that lead to skin aging for which BOTOX COSMETIC® is not a solution. For this reason, it is beneficial to develop a well-rounded age prevention plan with a skin expert in order to address aging from all angles.
