What to expect before and after tummy tuck surgery.

A tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, is a procedure to remove excess skin and fat and tighten abdominal muscles for a smooth and taut tummy. While not a remedy for weight loss or obesity, this body contouring procedure has an excellent effect on loose skin.

When it comes to this popular procedure, some of the most common questions we get asked are about the patient experience, from consultation to recovery, and of course, results. Essentially, patients are curious about what happens before and after tummy tuck surgery.

Throughout the years, we’ve been alongside many patients throughout their tummy tuck journeys and gained great insight into why they choose this procedure, and what the experience brings them.

Before tummy tuck surgery.

When patients undergo changes as a result of the aging process, pregnancy, weight gain and subsequent loss, it can lead to loose skin on the stomach that doesn’t respond to diet and exercise. This can be frustrating, and many of our patients experience low self-esteem as a result. The vast majority consider surgery to renew their self-confidence and be the best versions of themselves.

Once you choose to undergo abdominoplasty, Dr. de Kleer will thoroughly assess your condition and conduct a general health assessment to determine treatment candidacy. The administration of general anaesthetic will be discussed and explained prior to your procedure. Our team of highly skilled professionals take every measure to ensure you’re fully informed and prepared for both pre- and post- surgical care.

Immediately post-surgery.

It is normal to experience pain and swelling immediately after your tummy tuck. This discomfort may persist for several weeks, but you will be advised on pain management options, and stitches and compression bandages will be in place to promote proper healing. Dr. de Kleer will also explain how to care for your surgical incisions to ensure optimal recovery and comfort.

We recommend having someone available to drive you home and stay with you for at least two days following surgery. It’s also a good idea to take about two weeks off from work to give yourself time to rest and heal. Although we ask that you restrict your activities during that time, it’s important to begin walking soon after your procedure to promote recovery and healing.

Two weeks post-surgery.

After two weeks of resting and healing at home, you may return to work. At this point, most patients are back to normal daily activities, but we ask that you avoid strenuous physical activity and heavy lifting for six weeks.

After tummy tuck surgery.

It can take several months of healing to begin to feel normal, and to see your final results, but we’re happy to report that each of our patients agrees that this journey is worthwhile. Our patients find the results of this surgery to be so impactful, and they report feeling more confident and comfortable in their skin. We think these results speak for themselves.
