A non-invasive treatment to improve acne scars.

acne scars, dermapen, selphyl

Acne can have profoundly negative effects on the self-confidence of acne sufferers, which is further compounded by the presence of scars after the blemishes have cleared. The textural scars and discolouration that are left behind adds salt to the literal wound. Fortunately, Oakville patients concerned with acne scars have access to a safe and effective solution that yields substantive improvements.

Our treatment of choice for acne scars.

The treatment that is gaining notoriety among skincare experts worldwide for its anti-aging, resurfacing and acne scar revision benefits is microneedling. Oakville Plastic Surgery and Advanced Skincare provides microneedling treatments with the SkinPen.

The treatment involves gliding the Dermapen® over the skin’s surface. As it moves, thousands of micro-wounds are delivered into the skin via tiny needles. The gauge and depth to which the needles penetrate can be customized in order to target specific concerns such as the revision of flat, pitted or depressed acne scars. The treatment activates the synthesis of new collagen to replace the lost volume that causes the concavity. Further to this, microneedling breaks up scar tissue to minimize the appearance of flat and keloid scars, and the enhanced skin renewal aids in fading discolourations.

The non-invasive nature of a Dermapen® treatment means that patients do not experience any disruption to their regular routines. Patients can opt for a topical anaesthetic to reduce discomfort, but many do not feel they need it. After a microneedling session, some redness and swelling may occur over the treatment area, which should subside within 12-24 hours. Microneedling is safe for all skin types and does not pose the photosensitizing or heat-related risks associated with laser.

A preferred treatment method that is often recommended is to combine SELPHYL® with the Dermapen® treatment. A SELPHYL® treatment involves the injection of the patient’s own Platelet-Rich-Plasma (PRP) to improve skin healing and activate skin renewal. PRP in conjunction with the micro wounds created by the Dermapen® amplifies the skin smoothing benefits for acne scarring.

In order to realize noticeable and enduring improvements to acne scars, a series of treatments executed in close conjunction with follow-up treatments spaced further apart are recommended. The frequency and number of treatments will vary based on each individual’s unique situation.
